The greatest archeological dig
in history is not the search for
the earliest hominid, but the dig
that uncovers "Christ in you, the
hope of glory," which Paul speaks
of as
"the mystery which
hath been hid from ages and
from generations" - see
Colossians 1:26, 27.
Among the kingdom of heaven
parables recorded in Matthew 13,
Jesus speaks of a treasure hid in
a field
" which when a man
hath found, he hideth, and for
joy thereof goeth and selleth
all that he hath, and buyeth
that field" - verse 44.
My meditation this morning
(October 12) brought me the
words, "Dig a little deeper and
you'll find YOUR SELF!" A bit
later it came through as "find
YOUR SELF, HER SELF, HIS
SELF."
The message has been coming to
me repeatedly for a long time to
go beyond the focus on self. We
see here that, in finding our
Christ Self, the discovery is not
complete until we see that there
is one Self that is the same
treasure hid in each one of
us!
Charles Fillmore, co-founder
of Unity, was into this dig in a
big way, and the treasure he
discovered was his concept of
what he called "the twelve powers
of man." He found that the
metaphysical names of the 12
disciples revealed each of them
representing one of what he then
called the 12 powers, that is,
the makeup of the Christ
Mind.
Mr. Fillmore's idea was that
when Jesus called His 12
disciples together as His
"staff", He was giving us the
model for how each of can call
the Christ in us into activity by
activating these primal God-ideas
or qualities.
The background for the message
that was given to me in this
morning's meditation is that
prior to the meditation I was
realizing that we humans
experience problems and make
mistakes by not utilizing our 12
powers!
We cannot be superficial
devotees of the Christ Way! We
must dig deeper into this
wonderful inner treasure DAILY
and really live the 12 powers
idea! Once again I am chagrined
to admit that I have been digging
with a spoon and by fits and
starts, so I had better get with
it and join the greatest
archeological dig in history with
a shovel that will hit paydirt!
Get the idea?
I realize that you may not be
familiar with this concept. Mr.
Fillmore's book The Twelve
Powers of Man and several
other publications dealing with
the subject are available from
Unity and are sold in Unity
churches. To start you off, the
12 powers are: will,
understanding, imagination,
faith, zeal (enthusiasm), power,
love, wisdom (good judgment),
strength, order, elimination
(physical, mental, spiritual) -
the power to say "No", and life,
which I rename creativity.
There are times when we want
to activate one of these
qualities, and other occasions
when we want to use some of them
in tandem. Love and
understanding, working together,
produce compassion. Love and
elimination (also called
renunciation) relate to
releasing, giving up rather than
giving in, which looks like
forgiveness to me! Love and
strength are probably what we
today call "tough love" -
something that most of us do not
seem to express (you can include
me in this, but I am just
beginning to have it.) And it's
about time, I'm 88! In reviewing
this, I realize that wisdom and
good judgment help us to use love
wisely!
We long time Unity students
speak of identifying with the
Christ in us and the Jesus Christ
consciousness. Mr. Fillmore says
the best way to do this is by
calling our 12 disciples as Jesus
did. This is WORK, and oftentfmes
we want to take the easy way. If
we really want the Jesus Christ
consciousness, we must be willing
to join the dig! By the time you
read this, I will be well on my
way to DAILY practice.
