The ministry and mission of Jesus
Christ was/is that of bringing
the body of humanity into
wholeness.
Specifically this is the
avowed purpose of the Unity
movement.
It is also what all human life
is all about: you and I and all
of us are participants in this
mission - and the process is on
the way!
The Unity movement" has been
identified as a movement devoted
to Christian healing, that is, to
follow the healing ministry of
Jesus Christ. My theme in this
essay is that healing is the
result of health or wholeness in
consciousness. You can see that
the positive thinking aspect of
Unity is in tune with our mission
of bringing the body of humanity
into wholeness.
Succinctly then: whatever we
do that builds the consciousness
of health and wholeness results
in physical health and also is
the chief factor in producing
healing.
Until all humanity is whole in
consciousness, there will be
various needs for healing in the
physical body and in all aspects
of human life. Some times we have
felt indicted for whatever our
problems are. We are not always
in touch with the fact that we
are in the process of evolving
(comprehending) God's intelligent
design. We wish we were whole
(and perfect!) now in
manifestation as we are in
spiritual reality and
potentiality.
Very simply then, human life
is in the process of developing
or unfolding the consciousness of
this spiritual wholeness, and
when we do, we will be whole in
every aspect of human life - and
ready for whatever God has in
Mind for us in the next
dimension.
A good beginning is the
physical fact that health is the
human norm. Homeostasis is
defined as "the tendency of an
organism to maintain a uniform
and beneficial physiological
stability within and between its
parts; organic equilibrium." In
other words, it is natural for
our physical body to bring itself
back into health whenever there
is the need for what we call
healing."
This is the basis of Unity's
healing ministry. We see Jesus
instantly restoring people back
to health. In His case, the
consciousness was so powerful
that healing did not require a
long period of recovery. Have you
ever wondered about whether these
people later died? If so, they
needed, as all of us do, to come
into the deathless consciousness
of Jesus Christ.
So now I want to share with
you an exciting way to look at
the life we share as human beings
in this dimension. All of us
together form the one body of
humanity (of Christ) and we are
joined together in the glorious
process of bringing the body of
humanity into wholeness
absolutely !
Let me begin by telling you
about an incident that took place
when I was a member of Silent
Unity, the healing department of
Unity School: A Unity minister
was back at the School one day
and spoke before the Unity
workers. He said something I had
never heard anyone say before:
"Whenever I had a cold or any
need of healing, I used to just
pray for my own healing, but it
came to me recently that what I
really had the opportunity to do
was to pray for the healing of
everyone in the world who had the
same symptoms."
I have never forgotten that
talk!
He was right. Not only was it
unselfish and a good idea to
include others, but he was
actually onto something profound:
all of our prayer for healing are
helping our mission of bringing
the body of humanity into
wholeness. But the exciting idea
for you and me to contemplate and
apply is that every health
thought, every thought that
relates to wholeness, to
goodness, to love, to "whatsoever
is true," is healing because
health and wholeness and goodness
and love help restore us to our
norm, to equilibrium.
Here is my bottom line: so
many of our human efforts to
bring about healing for self or
others become efforts to be the
healer. Though it certainly is
true that we can be healing
channels, we short-circuit this
to some extent at least in
proportion to how hard we are
trying to heal!
What I am proposing is that,
whenever we are working with the
healing idea, we let go the try
and simply fill our consciousness
with everything that relates to
health and wholeness. The theory
is: when we rise into the health
and wholeness consciousness, the
healing proceeds.
At this point in human
evolution, death is the
phenomenon that frees the soul
into its state for new life
expression. Let us realize that
our spiritual work is not trying
to prevent death, but to enhance
life for this incarnation. Could
we expect miraculous healings and
people living to 100 and 110?
Obviously. But what we are really
after is the quality of life,
much more-than the quantity of
years.
The great mystery of the body
of Christ is that we are members
of this one body, and everything
we think, say, and do contributes
to the body of consciousness that
affects us all as individuals.
You and I and al of us are
healers, consciousness-builders.
Our every prayer, our ever song
of faith, our every thought and
expression of love and joy and
unselfishness, and kindness, and
honesty, and Truth is bringing
the body of humanity into
wholeness!
