I love to remember my first
days in 1937 as I became a worker
in Silent Unity and began my
preparation for my lifelong
glorious work - being a Unity
Minister. I started out as office
boy in Silent Unity files (what
stories I could tell you about
those days!) The whole thing was
thrilling and exciting to me, and
one of the highlights was my
privilege of delivering mail to
Frank B. Whitney, founder of
Daily Word. We called him Whitty!
The way he greeted me, treated me
as somebody, not just a kid, the
office boy, was very special to
me. I loved those frequent
stops!
Whitty wrote poems,
undoubtedly the greatest of which
was I BEHOLD THE CHRIST IN YOU.
It became one of the best-loved
Unity songs, and originated the
marquee saying of the
movement!
When we behold the Christ in
anyone, we are learning to see
God in the visible!
Dr. Wayne Dyer, in his famous
PBS series THE POWER OF
INTENTION, quotes Mother Teresa's
answer when someone asked her,
"What do you do all day walking
the streets of Calcutta?" She
said, "I behold Jesus Christ, the
Spirit of God, in every face I
see."
This is the essence of the
remarkable teachings of Unity.
When we behold the Christ in
someone, we identify him with the
expression of the Christ we see
in Jesus. As Mother Teresa says,
in Jesus Christ we behold the
full and perfect Spirit of God.
This is the Truth and Reality we
all share with Him, every
creation of God!
But it is important and
helpful to understand (and
remember!) that our human
life, all of it, is a learning,
unfolding, evolving experience
and process. It is obvious that
humankind has a long way to go
before it will show forth in the
fullness that we see in Jesus!
But it will happen, we are on the
way for certain!
It is more traditional to
think of God as invisible,
non-material, but Unity has been
making a major contribution to
our growing realization that God
is both invisible and visible.
Normally we define the in" as
meaning "not" visible, but for a
long time I have loved
interpreting it in the exact
opposite way as "in" the
visible.
Since those early, wonderful
days in Silent Unity, how I have
loved singing or reciting (and
visualizing) Whitty's words. You
may or may not have a copy, so I
will give them to you here as
they appear in Unity's WINGS OF
SONG:
I BEHOLD THE
CHRIST IN YOU,
HERE THE LIFE OF GOD I
SEE;
I CAN SEE A GREAT PEACE,
TOO,
I CAN SEE YOU WHOLE AND
FREE.
I BEHOLD THE CHRIST IN
YOU,
I CAN SEE THIS AS YOU
WALK;
I SEE THIS IN ALL YOU DO,
I CAN SEE THIS AS YOU
TALK.
I BEHOLD GOD'S LOVE
EXPRESSED,
I CAN SEE YOU FILLED WITH
POWER;
I CAN SEE YOU EVER
BLESSED,
SEE CHRIST IN YOU, HOUR BY
HOUR.
I BEHOLD THE CHRIST IN
YOU,
I CAN SEE THAT PERFECT
ONE;
LED BY GOD IN ALL YOU DO,
I CAN SEE GOD'S WORK IS
DONE.
Nothing is more important than
for the people of the world to
BEHOLD THE CHRIST in each other,
and as THE PEACE SONG says, "let
it begin with me." As each of us
makes this as constant practice,
it will spead!
So I will begin, dear friend,
I BEHOLD THE CHRIST IN YOU!
