I was on the phone with a
friend telling him I wouldn't be
coming to church because - to
quote myself - "I was wheezing
like a drunken sailor." As we
concluded the call, he told me to
take care of myself, and I said,
"I will - I am!" Instantly I was
deeply aware of the huge
distinction.
As I began to think about it,
I quickly saw that there was a
big lesson in this about the 12
powers prayer drill I am now
practicing faithfully. It was the
application of what Charles
Fillmore had written: "I Am
and I will." The meaning?
I Am whole and complete, as
God made me, and I will
express this Truth of my true
being.
In Mr. Fillmore's 12 powers
system, the 12 qualities or
attributes of our God-nature are
not what we need to create for
ourselves - God has already
created us this way and outfitted
us with these perfect and
complete qualities to make use of
now. Until we accept this Truth,
we are trying to believe
in and express the qualities. "I
will" is not a strong statement
until after we have realized and
stated "I Am."
This was what I was realizing
when I said on the phone, "I will
- I am." I wanted my friend to
hear that I was taking care of
myself already. Had I simply
said, "I will," he wouldn't have
been sure - and neither would
I!
Affirmations are often used as
magical potions to cause
something to happen! They really
are to establish in our
consciousness that God has
already set all these qualities
in motion. As one of my friends
often says, We don't have to keep
inventing the wheel!
Until we believe the 12 powers
are who and what we are right
now, any affirmation is kind of
like the old saying I heard when
I was a kid: "whistling past the
graveyard." Despite the
whistling, we're still
scared!
Though it is true that
affirmations build consciousness,
their effectiveness rests upon
the degree of our acceptance in
the present tense - I Am!
God is I Am and is
always the activity of life
(healing), love (bringing all
things into harmony and
peace), and substance
(supplying every need.)
Adapting the famous theme of
"Field of Dreams," when we
build it, they will come, when
we build the consciousness,
that is, accept it, the
results will happen!
