Rev. Donald O'Connor
Minister Emeritus

Be aware of the Mind in you that defines who you are.

Title: It Has Taken A Long Time to Get Here, So Let's Make Sure We Use What We have Gained!

From the beginning we have had the potential capacity to be perfect as God is perfect because God is who and what we are and gave us that capacity as individual life expressions in the beginning!

This is perfectly clear to you and me, but it has taken a long, long time - millions of years - to get to our present point of conscious unfoldment/evolution. Today we have something to celebrate then!

Somewhere way back in my seventy years of living and learning the Unity way (by the way I'll be 92 this month, so happy birthday to me!) I began to puzzle over how we human beings could be expected "to just do it," to intentionally decide to take the next step in our consciousness development. This was a vestige of my pre-Unity thinking that is essentially definable in terms of "God up there and me down here" - the separateness of God and human beings: "God is in Heaven, and I'm trying like hell to get there, and I don't know how!"

The pre-school child cannot work out the answers to fifth-grade questions, but, when he gets to grad school, the potential he had - in the beginning - has gone on to develop an idea for the space program. The same person! Yes, but it took a lot of days, a lot of all-night study and cram sessions and what sometimes appear to be stupid mistakes to get there. That's life.

The idea I developed in last month's essay gives insight into the answer to my puzzle: as we human beings have learned through the gradual unfoldment process to meditate, to contemplate, to wonder and to wait patiently for guidance, for the dawning of a new idea, for the answer to appear "out of thin air," we have found ourselves confident and ready to take a new step, to walk out into the darkness, the unknown. And when we get there, it isn't dark and it isn't unknown. God is the knowing quality in us. That's what Unity has taught me.

So, if you have a decision to make, a problem to solve, read the above and "follow, follow, follow."

I believe I heard this definition sometime: PRAYER IS THE WAY WE THINK ALL DAY LONG. Unity offers the method of affirmation to establish what we think about all day long. Here are the last two affirmations I have developed:

I LIVE MY LIFE IN CELEBRATION OF GOD'S UNCEASING ACTIVITY TO SHOW OUR HUMAN FAMILY HOW TO FULFILL OUR DESTINY.

I LOVE GOD AS THE ONE LOVING CREATOR/CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE. I LOVE MYSELF AND OUR HUMAN FAMILY AS A UNIVERSAL FAMILY SHARING EVERY GOD QUALITY, NOT CONFINED TO ONLY ONE PLANET. I LOVE AND GIVE THANKS FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL, MIRACULOUS PLANET EARTH, ITS EVERY LIVING CREATURE, AND GOD'S MYRIAD PROVISIONS FOR OUR HUMAN LIFE.
